Mumbai: A 24-year-old man died after a speeding SUV driven by a 17-year-old boy hit his bike in Mumbai’s Goregaon area, police said. The teen driver was arrested by the police and a case was registered against him and two others, including the SUV owner.
Navin Vaishnaw, the victim, distributing milk, died after a Mahindra Scorpio, coming from the wrong side, collided with his two-wheeler around 4 am and fled the spot, according to a police official.
After ramming the two-wheeler, the SUV then hit an electric pole. The teenage driver tried to escape, but he sustained injuries and was caught by the police.
As soon as the police received information about the accident, they reached the spot and took Vaishnaw to a hospital, where the doctors declared him dead.
A case was registered against the 17-year-old, the SUV owner Iqbal Jivani (48) and his son Mohammed Faz Iqbal Jivani (21), the police official said.
The police seized the car and arrested the accused, including the minor, after getting the help of the CCTV footage.
The teenage boy’s blood samples were sent to a laboratory to determine whether he was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident, the official added.
The police were investigating whether the accused partied with his friends before the accident.
The incident is similar to what happened in Pune, where a Porsche car, driven by a 17-year-old who was allegedly drunk, rammed a bike, killing two IT engineers — Aneesh Awadhiya and his friend Ashwini Koshta — on May 19.
The accident sparked massive outrage after the teenager was granted bail hours after the crash with conditions like writing a 300-word essay on road safety. Later, he was sent to an observation home till June 5.
