Kolkata : “She has probably died by suicide, please hurry,” the parents of a 31-year-old trainee doctor in Kolkata were told by a top official at Kolkata’s RG Kar hospital, hours after she was brutally raped and murdered inside the hospital. The information was conveyed to the parents in three frantic calls, which were made by the Assistant Superintendent of the hospital on August 9.
According to sources, the Assistant Superintendent was the first to speak to the victim’s family. In the first call, the Assistant Superintendent can be heard requesting the parents to come to the hospital, saying, “Your daughter is not well. Can you please come to the hospital immediately?”
The woman’s father, sensing something was amiss, asked for more details, to which the Assistant Superintendent replied, “She is not well. We are admitting her. Can you come quickly?”
When pressed further, the official hesitated, saying, “The doctors will tell you what happened when you get here. We found your number and called because you are family.”
The second call came shortly after, with the Assistant Superintendent sounding even more distressed. “Her condition is very critical. Please come as soon as possible,” she urged. The worried father demanded to know what had happened, but the response remained vague: “The doctors will explain. Please come here quickly.”
When the father asked about the caller’s identity, she revealed that she was the Assistant Superintendent and not a doctor.
The father, desperate for answers, questioned if there were any doctors present, but the call ended abruptly.
In the third and final call, the Assistant Superintendent told the trainee doctor’s father that she might have died by suicide. “The police are here. We are at the hospital, in front of everyone, making this call,” the Assistant Superintendent told the father.
The family, devastated by the loss, is now demanding answers from the hospital authorities about what exactly transpired in the critical moments leading up to their daughter’s death.
The body of the woman postgraduate trainee was found in a seminar hall at the hospital on August 9 morning. A civic volunteer, Sanjay Roy, was arrested the next day in connection with the crime.
Notably, the Assistant Superintendent was among the people questioned by the Kolkata Police in connection with the trainee doctor’s murder. The case is now being probed by the Central Bureau of Investigation.
The Kolkata Police and hospital administration were criticised for their handling of the trainee doctor’s case, with the Supreme Court highlighting the 14-hour delay in filing of the FIR.
