Paddy harvesting is still going on in Punjab. Stubble burning in Punjab and Haryana is often blamed for the increase in air pollution in Delhi after paddy harvesting in October and November.
As there is very little time to plant the rubber crop after the paddy harvest, some farmers set fire to their fields to quickly clear crop residues for planting the next crop.
However, a total of 36,663 incidents of stubble burning were recorded in Punjab in 2023, representing a decline of 26 percent over previous years. In the previous year (2022), 49,922 incidents were recorded, 71,304 in 2021, 76,590 in 2020, 55,210 in 2019 and 50,590 in 2018.
